I am 43 years old, I was injured 3 years ago installing a kitchen counter. I worked for a cabinet shop in north central Florida. The doctor at the emergency room took x-rays and suggested I see a neurologist he believed I had a herniated disc. So I ended up being sent to an orthopedics Dr. as per the insurance co. request. He sent me through some terrible physical therapy which made things worst.
Four months later he suggested I see a neurosurgeon which took months to get approval by now my injury was worst than ever. As soon as I saw the neuro-surgeon he said I should be operated on right away before it was to late to stop the damage.
This took 3 months for the insurance co. to approve. By the way, I had an attorney all this time totally useless to fight this system. I finally had the surgery and it went wrong anterior cervical fusion c-5&6. The screws in the metal plate became loose. It took 5 months to get a mylogram done which in return went bad some how they got bacteria on the needle.
Four days later I was rushed to the emergency room by my family I was going into a coma. The same Dr. that first seen me a year and a half ago did a spinal tap and found I had bacterial meningitis. I stayed in intensive care awhile but I made it. I have been left totally disabled according to all my Dr's but not to social security they say I can still talk?
I have been to the best teaching university hospital in Fla. for help and they say I will just have to live with chronic pain and numerous other problems the rest of my life. The workers comp insurance system is about as good as a pair of shoes with no soles. I blame the insurance companies way of handling my injury for the destruction of my life. My wife and I have lost every thing over the last 3 years but they cannot have our dignity. I suggest to all that may get injured on the job do not tell any one unless you really have to.
God Bless America
